The New Zealand Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Reserve (QAIMNSR) uniform was the official attire worn by New Zealand military nurses who served under the British Army Nursing Service during both World Wars, particularly throughout the Mediterranean, North Africa, and European theaters in WWII. The uniform was based closely on the British Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service pattern, but tailored locally for New Zealand officers and staff nurses.
Our replication is an exact copy of the originals. It consists of a grey-blue wool serge dress (1st version) or tunic with a matching ankle-length skirt (2nd Version) [both versions are offered for sale and can be chosen on the product selection menu], worn over a white cotton apron and a detachable white collar.
The tunic is buttoned down the front with brass buttons engraved with the QAIMNS insignia and features a fitted waist, open lapel collar, and shoulder straps.
A scarlet cape, lined with grey/ blue (your choice) serge, was draped over the shoulders and fastened at the neck with a silver chain clasp. The cape’s scarlet color symbolized the Queen Alexandra’s association and remained one of the most distinguished features of the uniform.
Rank distinctions were denoted by woven braid or metal rank badges on the shoulder straps. The nurses wore a white cap (provided), neatly starched, with the QAIMNSR badge (not provided) at the front. For tropical / field use, a lighter cotton drill version of the dress was also issued, often in khaki – can be selected on the product selection menu.
This ensemble symbolized professionalism, dignity, and service – the QAIMNSR nurses were known for their efficiency and compassion under some of the most challenging wartime conditions.
