This uniform set represents the standard attire of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) Nursing Service during the First World War (1914–1918). Designed for field hospitals and casualty clearing stations across Egypt, France, and the Middle East, this faithful reproduction consists of a grey cotton or fine wool dress, a detachable white apron, a white collar, and the iconic scarlet wool cape. The red cape, lined with grey cotton, was worn by both AIF and Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) sisters and staff nurses, symbolizing authority and compassion. It fastens at the neck with a small brass or bronze rising sun badge, the emblem of the Australian forces. The uniform is completed with a white veil or head covering, denoting the nurse’s rank and service status.
