Reproduction of the famous British WW2 “Rupert” parachute dummy, or paradummy, used by Allied forces as a deception device during the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
These dummy paratroopers played an important role in Operation Titanic, the airborne deception operation carried out during the night of 5–6 June 1944.
Approximately 500 dummy parachutists were dropped from RAF aircraft at several locations away from the principal Allied airborne landing zones.
Their purpose was to create the impression that substantial numbers of Allied paratroopers were landing in areas where no major airborne assault was actually taking place, helping confuse German defenders and divert troops from genuine Allied objectives.
Original Rupert dummies were constructed from simple hessian/sackcloth fabric and stuffed with materials including straw and sand to provide shape and weight.
The deliberately crude human form was sufficient because the dummies were intended to be seen descending by parachute at night and from a considerable distance.
