This World War I British Red Cross Nurses’ basic uniform replicates the standard attire worn by Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs) serving in hospitals and field units between 1914–1918. The uniform consists of a blue-grey cotton dress with long sleeves, white detachable collar, and matching white apron featuring a large red cross sewn on the chest. It was functional, durable, and designed to project a clean, disciplined image of wartime nursing service. The apron ties at the back, and cuffs could be rolled for work convenience. The uniform was typically completed with a white head veil or cap.
