Our M1914 French Army Garance Red Wool Breeches are an exact reproduction of the most iconic element of the French soldier’s uniform at the outbreak of the First World War. Cut from heavy wool in the traditional “garance” (madder) red dye, these breeches retained the flamboyant appearance of 19th-century French military dress, symbolising tradition and esprit de corps.
These breeches are tailored with a slightly loose upper thigh for comfort while marching or riding, narrowing below the knee for wear with puttees or leather gaiters. Reinforced seams at stress points gave durability in campaign conditions, while the distinctive colour made French infantrymen immediately recognisable in 1914 making them readily recognizable targets for enemy soldiers.
Although quickly replaced by horizon blue service dress from 1915 onward, the red breeches remain one of the most enduring visual symbols of France’s entry into WW1. This reproduction uses authentic wool weight, cut, and dye shade to match original surviving examples. Suitable for re-enactors, living history displays, museums, films, movies, theater and serious collectors.
