The Type B-2 Flight Jacket was introduced in 1932 as an improved replacement for the earlier B-1, marking the next stage in the evolution of U.S. shearling flight clothing.
Designed for unheated aircraft operating at moderate to high altitude, it retained the full sheepskin shearling construction of the B-1 but introduced a front zipper closure (replacing buttons), a higher stand collar with twin throat straps, and leather-reinforced seams for strength.
The outer surface was finished in dark seal-brown lacquered leather, while the interior remained natural fleece for insulation. It was warmer and more practical than the B-1, directly leading to the famous B-3 Flight Jacket (1934).
The B-2 was used primarily by bomber and observation crews in the early 1930s and is now one of the rarest early Air Corps garments.
