The Type AN-6552 Flight Jacket was introduced in 1943 as a Joint Army–Navy (A/N) specification intended to standardize leather flight jackets for both services.
It directly succeeded the Navy’s M-422A and paralleled the Army Air Forces’ AN-J-3, combining the best features of both. Constructed from seal-brown goatskin leather, the AN-6552 featured a mouton fur collar, bi-swing back, and knitted cuffs and waistband, providing warmth, comfort, and unrestricted movement.
The interior was lined in smooth russet or brown rayon, with a full brass zipper and an internal wind flap for protection.
This jacket marked the final wartime iteration of U.S. leather flight clothing before the adoption of the postwar G-1 series (55-J-14) in 1947, and it remains one of the most balanced and refined designs of WWII.
