The WWII British Red Cross Organization Nurse Uniform was the official attire worn by trained and auxiliary nurses serving in military and civilian hospitals, casualty clearing stations, and overseas detachments from 1939 to 1945. Distinct from the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) uniform, the Red Cross Organization nurse’s dress was issued to qualified nursing staff and senior auxiliaries attached directly to the British Red Cross Society.
Our replication of the uniform typically consisted of a pale blue-grey cotton dress with long sleeves, a button-through front, and a detachable white linen collar and cuffs. A white apron bearing the iconic red cross emblem was worn over the dress, often with a matching white belt or waist tie for a neat professional appearance. The headdress varied according to station: a starched white cap for hospital duty, and a lighter field-style headscarf for outdoor or mobile work are provided and can be cosen as in product selection options.. Senior nurses and matrons occasionally wore a darker blue-grey version with rank-style shoulder straps or piping trim – which can also be ordered here.
Made from medium-weight cotton drill or linen (approximately 7–8 oz per square yard), the uniform was both practical and symbolic, representing professionalism, discipline, and compassion. It was widely used in British home hospitals, convalescent centers, and overseas service units in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
