The aviators of the Imperial German Army, known as the Fliegertruppe and later reorganized as the Luftstreitkräfte (Air Service), wore a distinctive combination of standard army items and specialized flight gear adapted to the harsh and unique conditions of aerial warfare. Unlike infantrymen, pilots and observers faced extreme cold, wind, and oil exposure at altitude, and their uniforms reflected this blend of tradition and necessity.
Base Uniform
Beneath their flying gear, aviators typically wore the standard issue feldgrau tunic (early-war M1910 or later M1915 Bluse) with branch-specific insignia. Collar patches and shoulder straps carried the distinctive light blue branch color (Waffenfarbe) of the aviation troops. Ranks were indicated in the same manner as other army officers and enlisted men. Officers often had tailored uniforms with slightly finer wool. We provide the Officer Uniform only as in picture.
