Our French Army Model 1884 Képi is a reproduction of one of the most distinctive headgear items of the Great War. Initially issued in dark blue with red piping and crown, by late 1914 the képi began to be produced in horizon blue cloth to harmonize with the new uniform colour introduced for field service.
Our cap is constructed from fine wool over a stiffened body, the M1884 képi retained the traditional French military style: a flat, circular crown, vertical band, and short, stiff leather visor (usually blackened, you will need to blacken the visor yourself.). A small leather chinstrap is included, secured by one small plain brass button on either side. The unit number was often displayed on the front of the band in embroidered numerals, and we will do that for you free of charge if you will let us know what to embroider by email/WhatsApp/leave a message on the “instructions” space during checkout/product selection.
This reproduction captures all the period details: horizon blue wool cover, stiffened body, black leather visor and chinstrap, and correct unit number insignia, making it a perfect piece for collectors, re-enactors, living history, films, movies, theater, and museums.
