The Type AN-J-3A Flight Jacket was introduced in 1943 under the Army-Navy (A/N) Joint specification as an upgraded successor to the AN-J-3 and M-422A series.
Intended for both U.S. Army Air Forces and U.S. Navy aircrew, it was constructed from seal-brown goatskin leather with a mouton-fur collar, offering warmth and flexibility for multi-service use.
The AN-J-3A retained the A-2-style body and clean lines but incorporated Navy-style features such as a bi-swing back, underarm gussets, and internal wind flap.
The interior was lined with russet or light brown rayon, and the jacket used a brass Talon zipper, knitted wool cuffs and waistband, and a throat latch for closure in open cockpits.
It served as a bridge between the Army’s leather A-2 and the Navy’s later G-1, representing the final WWII evolution of the U.S. leather flight jacket line.
