WW1 Australian Light Horse Militia Tunic (Reproduction)
Our reproduction faithfully recreates the tunic worn by Australia’s mounted troops — the famed Light Horse regiments — during the First World War. The Australian Light Horse militia tunic was practical, robust, and distinctively styled to suit the needs of mounted soldiers in varied climates from the desert campaigns in the Middle East to Gallipoli.
Constructed from durable khaki-drab wool serge, the tunic follows the early Australian service dress style, with four external patch pockets (two pleated chest pockets and two larger skirt pockets), pointed pocket flaps, and a stand-and-fall collar. The front closes with five large brass buttons, while reinforced stitching provides durability for both mounted and dismounted duties.
Unlike standard infantry tunics, the Light Horse version was often tailored with a slightly more practical cut to allow ease of movement when riding. The tunic became a symbol of the ANZAC mounted tradition, worn with breeches, puttees, and the iconic slouch hat.
This piece is ideal for collectors, reenactors, and museums, representing the unique character of Australia’s mounted forces during WW1.
