Our French Army M1914 Greatcoat (Capote Mle 1914) is a faithful reproduction of the standard overcoat worn by French soldiers at the outbreak of World War I. Made from heavy dark blue wool (please see wool specifications in the product highlights above), it followed traditional 19th-century military design, with a tailored appearance.
The greatcoat was cut long for warmth and protection, reaching below the knee. It features a double-breasted front with two rows of six plain brass dull finish buttons, a large stand-and-fall collar, and turn-back cuffs. At the back, a half-belt and pleated skirt provides both structure and movement.
Although it was a symbol of French martial pride, the M1914 greatcoat, in combination with bright red trousers, made soldiers highly visible on the battlefield. This problem, and the heavy losses suffered in 1914, led to the introduction of the horizon blue M1915 greatcoat which gradually replaced the M1914 pattern.
