Our WW1 Canadian Army “Greyback” Shirt is the standard-issue undergarment worn by members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the Great War. Constructed from grey flannel wool-cotton blend, the shirt provided warmth, breathability, and durability under field conditions. Its distinctive “greyback” name derived from the grey-coloured fabric used throughout and is common with the British Army (BEF) and other Commonwealth Forces.
Our reproduction has authentic period details: a deep placket front with three buttons ( zinc), pointed collar, and long tails for tucking into breeches. The sleeves were cut generously for freedom of movement and finished with single-button cuffs. Flat-felled seams are reinforced at stress points, reflecting wartime manufacturing practices.
Originally issued in vast numbers between 1914–1918, the greyback shirt was universally worn by Canadian infantry and support troops, both on campaign, in camp and in the trenches. This reproduction preserves the authentic weight, colour, and cut of the original, making it suitable for collectors, re-enactors, films, movies, living history afficianados, and museums.
