The WW1 New Zealand Army Nursing Service (NZANS) uniform, as shown in the image, represents the official field and hospital attire of New Zealand nurses who served in Europe, the Middle East, and Egypt from 1915 to 1919. Closely modelled on the British Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) dress, it was adapted for New Zealand’s national identity and climate requirements during overseas service.

Our exact replication of the nurse uniform consists of a long grey cotton , ankle-length, with full sleeves, buttoned front, and turn-down white collar. Each sleeve bore two or three scarlet rank bands identifying nursing status. Worn over the dress was a crisp white cotton apron, secured at the back with ties, and a detachable white collar for sanitary purposes.

The most striking feature is the short scarlet wool cape fastened at the neck with  a metal clasp (available). The cape’s bright color denoted authority and served as a symbol of the nursing profession within the Empire’s military services. For headwear, a white starched cap was worn indoors and comes with the uniform, while a brimmed outdoor hat was used in field stations or embarkation duty (which we have been unable to procure).

Made from natural fibres suited to tropical and temperate conditions, the NZANS uniform was both functional and dignified, representing courage, care, and professionalism.

This is great buy for reenactors, history afficianados, museum displays, collectors, films/theater/movies.
