This reproduction pith helmet is modeled on the late-19th century British “Foreign Service” style helmet used during the Zulu War and other colonial campaigns. The helmet is constructed from genuine pith (tree-heart or cork core in some modern versions) covered in cotton twill. It features a wide brim, ventilated crown (typically with three rows of small holes ), an interior adjustable sweatband, and often a decorative badge or emblem (such as one from the 24th Regiment of Foot) mounted at the front. The chinstrap is made of faux leather or leather, and the underside is lined in light shade-cloth. This style was used in tropical and summer climates where sun and heat were major concerns.
